Our selection programme for varroa tolerance is based on the development of daily mite drop in colonies that develop well and show a good honey production. We assume that cumulative daily mite drop represents the mite population in a colony. The development of daily mite drop is the criterion. Therefore, we do not need to know the total mite population in the honey bee colony. The information about daily mite drop gathered by beekeepers is used for the development of various theoretical models to calculate the growth factor of daily mite drop. For this calculation see the mite drop form.
Based on this growth factor colonies are selected that are used in the selection programme. The growth factor of both the drone producing colonies and the queen producing colonies are known. In addition, the characteristics of the parent and grandparent colonies are known.
